Grand Arena Championships (GAC) is a scheduled player-versus-player tournament game mode where players put the might of their rosters against other players. This game mode has seasons that consists of four 1-week long events that contain 3 rounds each and requires Player Level 85 to participate.
There are five leagues in GAC, and each league contains five divisions. A player stat called Skill Rating is used to determine what Division a player will be in within a League. Players are assigned an initial Skill Rating based on their Galactic Power upon reaching level 85 and then placed in the corresponding division within Carbonite for the skill range their skill rating falls into.[1] From there it is up to the player's performance within each weekly event to increase their Skill Rating and move up to the next Division. It is important to note that not participating will decrease your Skill Rating. Every weekly event you miss will reduce your Skill Rating as if you had lost two matches during that week.[1]
Skill Rating will be adjusted at the end of each round based on whether it was a win or a loss. Also after each round, players will move up or down in Divisions based on the Skill Rating they were at when it ended. At the end of each season all players in Division 1 will move up to the next League and be placed in the Division that corresponds to their Skill Rating. All players that were in Division 5 will move to the next League down and be placed within the Division that corresponds to their Skill Rating.
When the next season begins all players will have their Skill Rating modified but their Division and League position will remain unchanged. This reduction is referred to as a skill squish and is used to keep the Skill Rating numbers from expanding too quickly over time.[2] Also at this time each Division will be assigned a new Skill Range and any players that are not within their new current Division Skill Range at the end of the 1st weekly event will drop down to the corresponding Division for their Skill Rating.
The 5 Leagues in order of rank from lowest to highest is: Carbonite, Bronzium, Chromium, Aurodium, and Kyber.
In Grand Arena Championships each player controls 4 zones called territories, with their territories on the left side of the map and their opponent on the right. These territories can run in two different formats: 5v5 and 3v3. In 5v5 players create teams of up to 5 characters to use on defense or to attack. In 3v3 players create teams of up to 3 characters. Along with the number of characters for squad teams changing, the event can also run with or without a territory for ship battles. The formats are shown on the main Grand Arena screen in the top right corner when players are joined in the event and they will last for that entire season.
Each weekly event begins with a 24 hour Join Phase where players choose to participate in that weeks event. Missing this phase means players will have to wait until the next weekly events Join Phase. Once joined, the players roster is locked in for all three rounds at the units current mods and Galactic Power, which is the measurement of a units upgrade progression including ability level and gear level. Players can re-save roster that allows players to apply a new lock any time before the event begins to account for any changes in the units Galactic Power and mods, allowing for players to join immediately instead of having to wait to the last second to get in as much unit upgrades as they can.
The group matchmaking process begins at the end of the Join Phase. This process will match up eight players to compete against each other in three rounds using a Swiss-system format where each competitor does not play every other player. Player groups are matched based on their Skill Rating only.
Each round consists of a 24 hour Defense Phase where players set teams on defense. The number of defensive squads and fleets changes based on the League you are in and is displayed in the corner of the territory on the GAC map and in the top right corner of the territory screen.
After the Defense Phase there is a 24 hour Attack phase where players take out the opposing player's teams that they set on Defense. When this phase begins assigned enemy defenses will appear for the front 2 territories closest to yours. You must conquer the territory in the front by defeating all enemy teams in it before it will unlock the back for you to be able to view and battle.
Winning the round is based on who has the most banners by the end of the round. Banners are earned by defeating enemy teams and conquering a territory. The number of banners awarded from battles will vary based on your performance in it.
Adjusting the number of units on a team can impact the total number of banners you can receive. Below is a chart of max possible banners depending on the number of units there are on a team.
When possible players are matched with opponents that have the same win count as them. Round matchups typically works as follows:
Grand Arena offers 4 groups of rewards that change based on a player's League and Division.
Before 12-13-2021, Grand Arena Championships use to have themed seasons that offered special rewards if you completed feats. This section goes over the history of these seasons and feats.
CG didn't start referring to "seasons" until Season 3. Before that, they were just referred to as Grand Arena Championship 1, 2, etc. There is a bit of discrepancy, as Season 3 was technically the 4th GAC season. The first GAC on 08/26/2019 is named here as Season 0. Seasons 0 and 1 had feats loosely based on characters from the Clone Wars. Seasons 2 and on took a much more thematic approach to feats, either following a faction (such as Sith or Nightsisters) or an event (such as feats centered around Ep. V: The Empire Strikes Back).
