Was the painting directly targeted or did one of the bombs just happen to hit it?

From everything I've read, the church nor the painting were targeted. However, the multitude of bombings and one somewhat direct hit on the convent complex increased the amount of paint flaking off, etc.

      Here are three of mine:
      1) I don't think that anyone would have a meal with so many people all sitting on just one side of the table.
      2) I think all of those guys standing should sit down.
      3) At the time of the events portrayed in the painting, people in that part of the world didn't sit on chairs when eating anyway. They sat or reclined on the floor.
      That's three.

Like many paintings of historical events, the illustrator wasn't there to witness it, nor were the people that wrote the story. Nor do we know in this case, if this supper actually occurred. It is a story passed down through generations via biblical texts.

How is it that every one thinks the person listed in the picture on Jesus right is John? That person is clearly Female!

Well, Patricia, it can't be everyone, because YOU are someone, and you don't think so. Since Leonardo didn't leave a seating chart with names, people have attempted on their own to figure out which figure depicts which historical personage. Since John

says that someone was leaning on Jesus' breast at the supper, and specious connections between that person, the author of the gospel, and someone named John have been made, the connection, though unsupported by hard evidence, has stood. Maybe Leonardo just painted that figure as effeminate. After all, this is an artist's rendering, not a photograph.

From the author:This fresco is not a photograph. Paintings are works of representation and imagination and are not necessarily contemporaneous documents.
