Amish Ground Beef Casserole = Cheaper Meal Option

We all know that meat is very expensive to buy. And when serving steak, or even chicken breast, etc., your meal can get expensive, especially with a large family.

But serving casserole dishes, such as Beef and Noodle Dairy Casserole, Yumasetti Casserole, or hamburger stuffing, is a great way to stretch the meat. When you add noodles, rice, or in this case bread, you can have a filling meal for only a few dollars.

So, if you are on a tight budget and trying to stretch the grocery money, casseroles are a cheaper option.

A lot of the Amish have large families to feed. But many of them raise animals and butcher their own meat. So it helps if they don't have to buy meat at the supermarket.

But they also quite frequently feed large crowds, so sometimes they make casserole dishes to avoid using a lot of meat.

Amish Recipe with Ground Beef

This ground beef stuffing casserole recipe is very easy to make, and it does not take a lot of time.

You can buy bread cubes or cut your own. It doesn't take long to cut several slices of bread into little cubes, and this is a great way to use up any stale bread that needs to be eaten.

I like to toast my bread cubes for about ten minutes before adding the remaining ingredients. But this is optional.

Fry the hamburger while you're preparing the vegetables for the stuffing.

I like to brown my butter a bit before adding the vegetables, but this is also optional. Then I use my handy little Ninja chopper to effortlessly chop the celery and onions.

Cook the veggies in the butter for a few minutes until they are softened. Beat the eggs and milk and add them to the butter/veggie mixture. Pour all of this over the bread cubes and mix.

Now you can either mix the ground beef into the stuffing or layer it into a casserole dish. (This recipe fits perfectly into my small roaster.)

Ground Beef Stuffing or Filling?

There seems to be an ongoing debate as to whether the Thanksgiving side dish that we all love (that's made with buttery bread cubes) is called stuffing or filling. And some people also call it dressing.

I think typically stuffing is considered to be that which gets stuffed inside the Thanksgiving turkey. Although, whether you call it stuffing, filling, or dressing, they're probably all similar dishes that include chopped veggies and a lot of bread and butter.

But then you also have dishes such as PA Dutch potato filling. It's made with that familiar and delicious bread stuffing/filling. But the main ingredient in the dish is mashed potatoes. Therefore it's not called "Filling" but rather "Potato Filling".

So anyway, in my opinion, filling/stuffing/dressing are all basically the same thing.

Although, there are lots of different recipes. And what you add in, or what you call the dish, may largely depend on where you live.

So this Hamburger Stuffing Casserole can just as well be called Hamburger Filling Casserole. Call it what you want. It's delicious and features those tasty, buttery bread cubes that most of us love.

Homemade Cream of Mushroom Soup

Since the Amish mostly cook from scratch, you might think that they wouldn't use store-bought canned cream of mushroom soup.

And there might be a few of them that are concerned about health factors and make their own. But the fact is, Amish cooks also use shortcuts, such as buying and using canned goods. And many of them will use store-bought cream of mushroom soup in casseroles.

But, mushroom soup isn't hard to make either. So feel free to use homemade mushroom soup for this hamburger casserole.

And if mushrooms are not your thing, you can substitute the mushroom soup with cream of celery or even cream of chicken if you please.

Can I Use Ground Turkey or Venison for this Stuffing Recipe?

Yes, you can use any kind of cooked ground meat that you desire.

Obviously, your choice of meat will affect the taste a bit. But this casserole would be delicious when made with ground turkey, ground venison, ground chicken, or even ground sausage.

Sausage is already seasoned though, so if you're going to use sausage, you may want to be careful not to oversalt it.

It's a basic stuffing recipe, so if you don't want to add any meat, feel free to make it without.

What Could I Serve with Hamburger Stuffing Casserole?

This casserole dish can be served as a side, but it can also easily serve as a main dish.

Serve a simple side salad along with this casserole, and you have a complete meal.

There are also lots of other sides that could pair well with hamburger stuffing.

Amish mashed potatoes are great with this dish. Some other options include Amish Scalloped Potatoes, Baked Corn, Seven-Layer Lettuce Salad, or my delicious broccoli and cauliflower salad.
